Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu Village

Aguas Calientes is a small town at the bottom of the Machu Picchu in the middle of a breathtaking mountain jungle panorama. Because of the closest location, only 12 km away from the archeological site, Aguas Calientes has developed to an important touristic point in the past years. In this town is the final stop of the train to Machu Picchu as well. Aguas Calientes doesn`t offer any other sights but on the other hand many hotels in different price ranges, restaurants and souvenir shops.

The thermal springs themselves which are name givers of this town is situated just 800 m eastwards of the city center. The 38-46°C hot sulfur-containing water is sparkling out of a rocky bottom. A bath in the thermal springs seems relaxing and is a hot tip for everybody who stays longer in Aguas Calientes.

To visit the lost Inca city of Machu Picchu you can use one of the many shuttle buses. The bus-ride takes approx. 20 minutes and costs about 6 USD. Who prefers to go by foot can hike on the the 1.5 hours-taking climb to the ruins. Indeed this way is partly exhausting but you get a good expression of how tough the Incas were. Moreover it exists the possibility to take a bus up to the ruins and walk down by foot or the other way round.

Who decide to stay two days longer in Aguas Calientes can undertake a lot of things. So you can visit the archeological site of Machu Picchu a second time to enjoy the full size. Moreover you can hike on the Huayna Picchu, the Inti Punku or the hill between Inti Punku and the "caretaker house". Many tourists also want to see Mandor Pampa.
